George Washington Patriot Pairs

The Patriot Pairs Mentoring Program is an important way in which George Washington High School is addressing the achievement gap and helping struggling students. Mentors meet with incoming freshmen once each week during first period and help the students adjust to high school by helping them with homework, working with them on study skills, fostering good attendance and study habits, and providing encouragement and accountability. All mentors, as well as the coordinator of the program, are volunteers and most work full time in jobs unrelated to education. In 2019, Friends of Nathan Yip provided a grant to purchase TI-83 graphing calculators to the entire incoming freshman class of Patriot Pairs mentees.

Think Like a Genius Challenge

Think Like a Genius® Roadmap to Success™ engages young people to envision and create a world of possibilities and opportunities for themselves. Through this program, they move from being unclear about what’s important to them, what they want out of life, and what they care about the most, to gaining real insights into their own interests, passions, priorities and goals. The Think Like a Genius Foundation Challenge invites diverse organizations to assemble teams of young people between the ages of 14 and 19 to address pressing community issues in Denver. In 2017, Friends of Nathan Yip provided a grant to sponsor one community youth team, providing a project stipend and funding toward a cash prize for the youth team with the winning solution to solving the issue of bullying.

Inside the Orchestra

Inside the Orchestra for Schools is an immersive, interactive music education program geared toward students in K-8th grade. It brings a 14-15 piece orchestra into schools and provides educational programs to schools that have depleted or non-existent music programs. The kids sit literally inside the orchestra as they are seated on the floor and surrounded by professional musicians. Conductors are tour guides and educators throughout the program, teaching the kids about the music and instruments as the orchestra performs around them. The audience is treated to up-close-and-personal demos by the strings, woodwinds, horns and percussion. Scripting is designed to not only introduce music concepts, but to tie to curriculum that children are studying in other subjects. Inside the Orchestra prioritizes high-need schools, with the vast majority of its school programs serving schools with a free/reduced lunch rate of over 80%. Schools are not charged to participate in the program. In 2016, Friends of Nathan Yip provided a grant supporting school outreach programs.
